Having a baby changes your whole life so it only makes sense that you prepare properly for it. Becoming a parent means that everything you will do from that day on, and how you do it, will revolve around your child’s well-being. After all, only you can ensure the little bundle of joy’s comfort and safety.
In terms of comfort, what can be cosier than a thoughtful nursery? Couples these days pay special attention to this, often starting preparations months before the due date. Nursery decoration is not only a good way for the anxious mother-to-be to pass time, but it also helps transform her nervousness into excitement by allowing her to envision her child in her arms.
In many Pakistani houses, there is often no extra room available for a nursery. In this case, the storeroom attached to the bedroom, or a large walk-in closet, can be used for this purpose. Personally, this is why I believe that floor plans these days should include small rooms. A small room can easily become not only a nursery, but even a personal library, a home office, or a gaming room later on.
However, if you don’t have any extra space in your house, don’t worry. You can easily reserve one corner of your bedroom to serve as the baby’s area.
It’s all about the details
If you decide to set aside a part of your room as the nursery, be mindful that any decoration will be temporary. It’s best not to opt for new paint or wall papers. Instead, go for wall decoration such as pictures, wall hangings and baby toys.
However, this advice does not necessarily hold up for a proper, separate room. A baby nursery will look less like one if it isn’t painted as such. Choose the wall paint accordingly for a boy or girl. If you want to keep the gender a surprise, pick neutral colours, such as yellow or mint green. Wallpapers can be more interesting because they give you a chance to mix and match styles, colours and patterns.
Nurseries adorned with all the fun items that babies love are endearing. When picking out toys, buy ones that can stimulate a new-born’s senses. Pay special attention to the material used to make sure it will not irritate the child’s skin.
Some vital toys and accessories include wind chimes, soft books, a music box, a hanging mobile and cute, stuffed animals.
Furniture and fixtures
A baby crib (or cot) tops the list of essential furniture for a nursery. It is basically a small, soft, lightweight bed covered from all sides. Cribs are essentially made of material that does not chip and become splintery after a while. Depending on the material, size and brand, the price of a baby cot ranges between PKR 6,000 to PKR 15,000.
A chest of drawers is vital, too. It’s the perfect storage space as well as a countertop that can be used for different purposes. I would not recommend you to buy this in baby-specific colours because this piece of furniture can certainly be used in other rooms later on. For the same reason, the chest of drawers should be made of good quality wood. In terms of price, it will cost you around PKR 10,000.
Another compulsory item is a baby wardrobe. Since the nursery is often devoid of built-in closets and decorative wood work, not having a wardrobe will make it troublesome for you to keep your new-born’s things in order. Compared to regular wardrobes, baby wardrobes are, of course, smaller in size. However, the good thing is that your child can use this for years to come. Choosing to buy wooden wardrobe in neutral shades and durable material is wise. The price of a sturdy wardrobe ranges between PKR 15,000 to PKR 25,000.
Protecting the toddler
Baby proofing is an essential part of nursery set-up. Here is what you can do to make this area as safe as possible:
- Carefully pad all the sharp edges of the furniture
- Cover all the sockets and switch boards within the baby’s reach with duct tape
- Look for holes and patches that can be unhygienic and fill them up properly without compromising on the room’s aesthetic
- If there is window, make sure it has a grill and can be locked properly
- The crib should be secure enough to make it difficult, almost impossible, for the toddler to climb out on his/her own
- Do not keep any sharp toys and accessories in close proximity to the baby
Aside from these points, it is a good idea to invest in a baby monitor. Also, make sure the room is breezy, bright and well-ventilated.
Every step of preparing the baby nursery is certainly an experience. Cherish every minute of it, be as detailed as you like and ensure that your child gets the best of your time, money and love.
